Report Card---"Manchester By The Sea"

"Manchester By The Sea" is a totally absorbing, extremely evocative of the Boston area, overwhelmingly textured, personal story about family responsibility, and trying to make up for past mistakes.  Casey Affleck and Michelle Williams are both astounding.

Consistently absorbing.

Constantly.

Is it controversial?

Extremely.

Is it a story worth telling?

Certainly.

Is it good storytelling?

Extremely.

Is it well cast? Well played?

Up and down the line.

Breathtakingly.

Did the director put such a personal stamp on it so that no one else could have made it?

To a major degree.

How long does it take to establish the film's locale and time period?

Immediately.  Not a problem.

Is it too long? Too short?

Length was not an issue.

Is it believable? Do you care about the characters?

Very much, and very much.

Is it predictable? Does it surprise you?

I never knew where it as going, and there were surprises along the way.

Do you think about it after you've seen it?

Often.

Here and there.

Would it have been worth the thirteen bucks it would have cost to see it in the movies?

Is it impressive?

Very.

So far the best thing I've seen this season.
